In
a new investigation by Orb Media, it has been found that microplastic
contamination is prevalent in the tap water of many countries around the
world.
According to the new study, 83% of the samples taken
were found to be contaminated with plastic fibres. This study includes
tap water samples from over a dozen nations.
The United States
was found to have the highest contamination rate, at 94%. Plastic fibres
were found in the tap water sampled at sites including Congress
buildings, the US Environmental Protection Agency headquarters and Trump
Towers in New York. European Nations including the UK and Germany were
found to have the lowest contamination rate of 72%. The average number
of fibres found in each 500 ml sample ranged from 1.9-4.8 .
“We have enough data from looking at wildlife, and the impacts that it’s
having on wildlife, to be concerned,” said Dr Sherri Mason, a
microplastic expert at the State University of New York in Fredonia, who
supervised the analyses for Orb. “If it’s impacting [wildlife], then
how do we think that it’s not going to somehow impact us?”
