A
team of researchers from the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois
and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have
discovered a new way of producing hydrogen fuel. This new process
centres around using a combination of sunlight and photosensitive lipids
to produce hydrogen from water.
Producing hydrogen on a large
scale has always been problem, mostly due to fuel cells being rather
complex and expensive to produce. The team focused on using a
less-frequently-used process of extracting hydrogen from water through
solar power using a special compound. This compound was made of a
photosensitive protein shaped into nanodiscs - made from circular
fragments of cell membrane composed of a lipid bilayer.
To
induce photocatalysis (to produce hydrogen from sunlight), the team
dissolved the nanodiscs in water with titanium dioxide and tiny amounts
of platinum. Using white light, it was found that hydrogen was emitted
from the experiment at an almost constant rate for some two to three
hours.
