Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017) was an Iranian mathematician and professor of mathematics at Stanford University. In her youth, Mirzakhani won 2 gold medals (1994 and 1995) in the International Mathematical Olympiads for high-school students, even attaining a perfect score in 1995. She received a B.Sc. degree in mathematics in 1999 from the Sharif University of Technology in Tehrān and later earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 2008 she became a professor at Stanford University. Her work primarily focused on the study of hyperbolic surfaces by means of their moduli spaces. In 2014, she became the first woman and the first Iranian to be awarded a Fields Medal, the highest scientific award for a mathematician.
