Lillian Gilbreth (1878- 1972) was an American psychologist and an engineer. She earned her
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in literature from the University of California, Berkeley. Later, along with her husband, she worked on applying social sciences to industrial management. This method of time-and-motion study increased the efficiency of industrial employees through identification and analysis of the number of movements and the amount of time needed to complete a specific task. Their publication in 1911 surrounding this was Motion Study (1911). After this, Lillian changed the focus of her graduate study from literature to psychology and in 1915 she earned a doctorate from Brown University. Lillian held teaching positions at Purdue University, the Newark College of Engineering, and the University of Wisconsin.
