Evelyn Nelson (1943-1987) was a Canadian mathematician. Nelson earned her degree in honors mathematics from McMaster University. Her research surrounded the applications for universal algebra and the use of universal algebra in theoretical computer science. Her main perspective was that the problems within theoretical computer science required algebraists and algebra to find solutions. Eventually, her findings were published in multiple computer science journals and led to research collaborations with many computer scientists. In 1983, Nelson became a professor in the Math department at McMaster University. Soon after, she was appointed chair of the Math department in the Computer Science section. In addition to her decorated life as a professor, Nelson published over 40 papers surrounding universal algebra, theoretical computer science, and algebraic logic.
