According to a new study by the journal Nutrition and Healthy Aging a new diet called the “16:8 diet” can have dramatic effect on obese adults.
The diet consists of 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of feasting, hence 16:8. Dr. Krista Varady, a researcher in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition, University of Illinois at Chicago, hosted the experiment with 23 obese volunteers. Volunteers were, on average, 45 years of age and had a BMI of 35.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., volunteers ate any type and quantity of food they desired, but for the remaining 16 hours they could only drink water or calorie-free beverages. This study lasted for 12 weeks.
Volunteers did lose weight by the end of the experiment (3% of their body mass), and they also experienced improvements in blood pressure (systolic blood pressure decreased by about 7 mm Hg).
Quote from Dr. Varady, “The results are similar to the results we’ve seen in other studies on alternate day fasting, another type of diet, but one of the benefits of the 16:8 diet may be that it is easier for people to maintain.”
