   From the NewsoftheUniverse Team, we would like to bid our viewers a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! To celebrate this festive season, we would like to present a special Photo of the Week as photographed by the ESA's Mars Express spacecraft.

   Shown in the image above, a large patch of fresh, untrodden snow is visible. This wonderful pile of ice water is known as Korolev crater located on Mars. It is 82 kilometres across and found in the northern lowlands of the Red Planet. Within this well-preserved Martian crater is a mound of water ice some 1.8 kilometres thick all year round.

   Photographed using Mars Express' High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), this view of Korolev crater is composed of five different 'strips' that were combined to form a single image.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a spectacular photo of the constellation Scorpius. Taken by the photographer Yuriy Toropin, this beautiful photo features some of the most colourful parts of the night sky, located conveniently close to the centre of the Milky Way. Visible in this photo are the nebulae IC4592 at the bottom left and IC 4604, also known as the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, at the top right.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature an amazing photo of the Milky Way over Lake Tahoe. Captured by the talented photographer Dave Morrow, this beautiful photo displays some of the beautiful landscape visible along this interstate lake including the impressive Sierra Nevada mountain range in the background. Featured in the foreground is the Bonsai Rock, with its reflection visible in the clear waters of the lake.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature an amazing shot of the Milky Way. Taken over White Sands National Monument, this lovely shot transports the viewer to the sandy desert of New Mexico. In a world where the silence is deafening, yet peaceful, the cold sands underneath are cast in a pale light underneath the towering majesty of the Milky Way galaxy above.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a delectable photo of the Milky Way galaxy. Photographed by the talented photographer Stephen Coy at Catherine Hill Bay, this lovely picture features the long jetty that reaches out into the bay. As it is evident, clouds are rolling into the skies when this photo was taken, reflecting some of the airglow from the nearby city.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a fantastic shot of the Milky Way taken by skilled photographer Matthias. Taken during this year's Perseid Meteor Shower, our beautiful home galaxy is visited by the beautiful streaks of burning meteors entering our atmosphere at blistering speeds. For their sacrifice, around mid-August as Earth enters the remnants of comet Swiff-Tuttle, we are greeted with the beautiful streaks associated with the Perseid Meteor Shower.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a fantastic photo of the Milky Way. Taken over Norah Head, New South Wales, Australia, this lovely photo features the Norah Head LIghthouse underneath the beautiful Milky Way Galaxy. Like a beacon of light, this lighthouse shines brightly while contrasting with the natural splendour of the stars of our home galaxy.

 This week we would like to feature a stunning star trails shot captured by photographer Steve Ryan. Taken during the Perseid Shower five years ago, this photo was compiled specifically to highlight the meteors. Instead of the usual smooth lines visible in a typical star trails photo, this shot combined frames that were taken consecutively of each other with some that were taken minutes apart to create the segmented effect visible in the round circles of the trails.

  This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a stunning photo of the Milky Way. Taken over the town of Menden in Germany by the talented photographer Sebastian Kramer, this photo features the section of the Milky Way near the constellation Cygnus. Due to its position on the Milky Way, Cygnus is renowned for hosting an abundance of deep sky objects including M39, an open star cluster and the North American Nebula.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a stunning compilation of some of the brightest planets in our night sky. Taken by the talented photographer Agustí Ortoneda using a Skywatycher200 and an ASI178mcc with the aid of a 2x barlow lens, this lovely photo features the planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. What makes these planets unique is that all three of these planets' oppositions took place in a span of less than 80 days. Jupiter's opposition occurred on May 8, followed by Saturn's opposition on June 27. Mars' opposition took place yesterday on July 27 in conjunction with the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. Even though all of these oppositions have passed, the three planets will still be bright in the night sky for many more days to come this summer so be sure to take the opportunity to take a good look at these three planets, along with the planet Venus, during the early and midnight skies.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a serene shot of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. Taken in Egmont National Park in New Zealand by the talented photographer Cortland McCullum, the peak of Mt. Taranaki can be seen in the foreground, silhouetted by the beautiful star-filled sky and the majestic Milky Way. On this night, it was a little chilly, worthy of a few layers of clothing and a warm blanket. But as the Milky Way rose above the horizon, all that cool air disappeared as the starry sky filled the night, beautiful in all of its glory.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a beautiful star trails photo. Taken by the talented photographer Võ Hiếu in Lahti, Finland, this was photo was captured using a Sony A6300 mirrorless camera. To be summarize the experience of taking this photo, we would like to quote a portion of Hiếu's original caption:
"I stood there, alone in the dark, listening to the sounds of the forest, gazing at the remnants of thousands of stars lightyears away."

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a magnificent photo of the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis over the frozen lakes of Iceland. Photographed by the talented James Lee, this amazing nightscape was photographed last December near the winter solstice. As the beautiful Milky Way rose over the sky, it's mystifying light melded with the dancing glow of the aurora, creating a vivid nightscape never to be forgotten.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a jaw-dropping photo of the Milky Way. Taken in the Chilean Atacama desert by photographer Luis Calçada, this 20 second exposure demonstrates the effects of taking photos in locations unaffected by light pollution. With over 80 percent of the world's population living under skyglow, the sights of the Milky Way are quickly becoming sights only restricted to LED screens.

This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature an amazing shot of the Moon. Taken by Enrico Punzo, this lovely zoomed-in shot of the Moon features the Copernicus Crater in all of its glory. Located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum, this crater is found slightly northwest of the centre of the Moon's Earth-facing hemisphere and is visible using binoculars. This shot was made possible using a @celestronuniverse C8 taken from Milan.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature a beautiful shot of the Milky Way standing guard over the Isle of Wight. In the spotlight for this photo is St. Catherine's Oratory, also known to locals as the Pepperpot. This is one of the highest parts you can get on the Isle (and therefore the closest you physically might get to the Milky Way) and is also the only medieval lighthouse still standing in Britain.

 This week for Photo of the Week, we would like to feature an amazing shot of the Milky Way with the Northern Lights adorning the background. Taken in Finland in subzero temperatures by talented photographer Petri Kangasniemi, this amazing photo took a patient amount of waiting to capture, after many cloudy skies. But in the end, the skies opened up, revealing the majestic Milky Way over the cold lands of Scandinavia.
