WOMEN IN STEM: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (1953-) is an Indian entrepreneur who is the Managing Director and Chairman of the company Biocon, a biotechnology company. Mazumdar-Shaw was born in Bangalore, India where she completed her early schooling from Bishop’s Cotton Girl’s High School in 1968. In her early years she wanted to be a doctor, but later on earned her BSc in Zoology with Honors from Mount Carmel College of the Bangalore University in 1973. She completed her postgraduate studies from Ballarat College, Melbourne University. Mazumdar-Shaw began her career as a trainee brewer at Carlton & United Beverages and after working there for a few years she began working at Biocon Biochemicals Limited based in Ireland. She founded Biocon in India with an initial capital of only 10,000 rupees and went through many struggles at the beginning due to lack of funds and gender discrimination. After Biocon got an IPO (initial public offering) in 2004, Mazumdar-Shaw became the richest woman in India. Mazumdar-Shaw has received many awards and acknowledgements for her achievements such as the Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth and Express Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit Award for Dynamic Entrepreneur in 2009. She was deemed as the ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ by the Economic Times in 2004. Mazumdar-Shaw ranks on number 80 on Forbes list of 100 most powerful women (2012).
