According to new research from the University of Queensland's Brain Institute, Australia, Honeybees (Apis mellifera) feel a bias in both left and right-handedness when flying through obstacles.
The scientists studied this feature by making honeybees decide whether to go through two different apertures when encountered by a barrier. The Insects easily detect which passage was the safer and quicker route to fly through.
Not only do these biases help improve the flight efficiency of a bee swarm, this feature might improve drone aircraft fleet safety and provide a more collision-free navigation.
Quote from Professor Mandyam Srinivasan, “Unlike humans, who are mostly right-handed, some bees display a strong left bias, others a strong right bias, and yet others a weak or zero bias.”
