Meteorites Open Up New Knowledge to How Life Started

Article Written By: Bright Li

Recently, liquid water and complex organic compounds were found in a 4.5-billion-year-old salt crystal by the United States, UK and Japan. This crystal was found in meteorites smashed into a children’s basketball game in Texas on March 1998.

The two rare meteorites named Zag and Monahans contained organic ingredients that could explain the origin of life, including proteins formed from amino acids

The scientists found that the organic matter originated from water-rich parent body, such as an ocean world in the early Solar System.

There are no clear clues to where the meteorite originates from, but observations lead to believe they come from the water-spewing volcanic activity on Ceres.

Quote from Dr. Yoko Kebukawa, Yokohama National University, “Everything leads to the conclusion that the origin of life is really possible elsewhere.”
